What's Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)?

BIA is used to estimate body composition using a measure of conductivity to calculate a biological factor representing different types of body tissue. The BIA on its own has some limitations as follows;

The limitations of BIA:

The human body is represented as a simply cylindrical shape determined by height and weight.
Assumes body composition is homogenous and evenly distributed.
Does not consider individual differences and variation of Body Composition,
Does not factor in the changing environment (temperature) & body heat, and stress

However, in reality the body is much too complex to base calculations on the above assumptions and with the above limitations.

In order to use BIA to accurately analyze the ‘real’ body, 5 factors must be considered in the calculation.

Tetra Polar Method

The tetra polar method measures separate currents from electrodes (which send an electric current) and a voltage electrode (which detects impedance). Contact resistance is minimized, resulting in high accuracy of data analysis. The technology uses the same position for each person (feet and the hands). This reduces measuring error and increase reproducibility of results.
